Meet India’s talented young web designer, Diptanshu Mahish
Hi Diptanshu! Please introduce yourself.
Hello, I'm Diptanshu Mahish, a designer and developer from India. I am currently a 4th-year B.Tech student at the Academy of Technology, Adisaptagram, West Bengal, India. I have worked as an intern at FYIPEN Pvt Ltd, India, and currently, I do more freelance work!
My goal in this field has always been to make the digital world a bit more "beautiful" and minimal 😊. That's what drives me to create "visually appealing and technically feasible" apps and websites!
What is life like for young people in India?
In India, life for young people is quite different compared to other countries around the world! Here, everyone is expected to "not earn" money until they are done with their education (in 90% of cases). However, this has been changing as unemployment among youth increases! Nowadays, young people understand the need to rebel against this mindset, starting work or opening startups to earn. Many have been successful! But yes, the criticism for doing anything except studying is still high—parents, teachers, and society expect you to give maximum importance to education, even though the curriculum is outdated and not suitable for many people's lives. Things are slowly changing, and we're currently in a transition period. Let's see what the future holds!
What are some Western ideas about India that are incorrect?
Lots of things! In my opinion, I’d like to talk about a cycle—racism being a key part of it. When Indians go to most Western countries, they often face racism in schools, universities, restaurants, and other places. The same thing is happening in India now. Because people face these issues abroad, some tend to recreate a similar experience for Westerners here. As a result, Westerners go back to their countries saying India is a scam hub, and that people treat them badly. It's a vicious cycle!
Another issue that I see is by vloggers from around the world. Many popular Youtubers, vloggers visit India, they make travel vlogs, all great till here, but the issue that this raises is that, these people tend to only visit some particular, "so called popular places". Now these places being visited by so many tourists, naturally make them crammed up, or in some cases maybe a bad experience for the tourists. This results in tourists, especially Westerners forming a wrong opinion on India, they judge India entirely on these places and there experience there. India is much beyond that! Every place is unique here, literally every place, every state in India has a different culture! The ray of hope here, are a few Youtubers who actually understand this and educate people about the reality.
The cleanliness, Westerners seem to criticize India, for being a very unhyegeinic and dirty country, people throw away trash here and there, this is true upto some extent I agree, but there are a lot of places in India, that are spotless as well! And I have seen cities like NYC and many other popular cities to be pretty much really dirty as well!
Another thing is about the education system. This may contradict my previous point about education in India. I've heard Westerners consider the Indian education system very outdated, but in certain cases, things that seem very complex to them are super easy for many Indians because we've been taught them from a very young age!
How did your coding journey begin?
I started coding during the 2nd semester of my B.Tech CSE program. I was really fascinated by the web and apps! I used to think, what if I built my own and made better designs? That’s when I started designing in Figma, making websites using Next.js, and creating apps using Flutter. My biggest project has been an OTT platform called Catchmflixx. I made the entire frontend for this project—the web app, Android app, iOS app, and the complete brand design as well.
